Moissanite Engagement Ring Collection

I have created this moissanite engagement ring collection following the points of reason mentioned in my mossanite introduction article and in correlation with the most popular engagement ring designs in South Africa at the moment. Although every engagement ring in this site can be set with a moissanite and vice versa, this collection is designed around the major advantage of using this stone – a substantial size. Many times, I stated the impossibility of emulating the appearance of a large diamond using clusters of smaller ones, halos and other design techniques used to make a diamond look bigger. It is just not working. Unfortunately, big diamonds are too expensive and the designers are pressed on using these techniques to achieve more substantial look. Now, with the moissanite engagement ring collection these size restrictions are off and I can offer reasonably priced models designed for large stones. The initial collection offers variations of three popular engagement ring styles in all their variations, for stone sizes equivalent to 1ct, 1.2ct and 2ct round stones and 1ct and 1.5ct of oval stones. Different sizes are available on request. More styles will be added subsequently.

The settings are designed adhering to the high end jewellery standards, with healthy thickness and focus on longevity, wearability and safety of the setting rather than budget. The bezels and the shanks of the entire collection are designed to accommodate a wedding band next to the ring, without damaging the bezel or creating a negative space. All shanks are comfort fit (with rounded inner wall).

Protea engagement ring settings

The protea settings are very popular as bezel style in South Africa. In smaller stone sizes however the detail becomes too small and difficult to read. In my protea bezel designed for larger stones some of the petals are extended and used as prongs to set the stone. These prongs, being double make the setting stronger and more secure. The added second, lower row of petals makes the bezel look closer to the protea and adds rigidity to the structure making it even more secure. The shanks of the entire collection are comfort fit with healthy thickness. Here is an image where you can compare the 3 different stone sizes used most commonly for this style: 6.5, 7 and 8mm. Different sizes are available on request.

Protea trinity settings

Trinity engagement ring settings are probably as old as style as the solitaire settings. The terminology here is a bit blurred, so as trinity I refer to a three stone ring where the shoulder stones are round. In this trinity models I am using 4.5mm shoulder stones irrespective of the different main stone size. That looks balanced to me, however the size of the shoulder sones can be increased to 5,5mm if requested and providing the finger size is fairly big. The protea element is passed to the side bezels, while the ring still has the clean space to accommodate a wedding ring next to it.

Protea trilliant settings

The trilliant setting has triangular cut shoulder stones. It is a classic three stone ring where the side stones, together with the main, create the illusion of a single elongated large stone. Again the terminology here is mixed up. Trillion is often used for triangular cut stones instead of trilliant. Which one is correct I am not sure, however I prefer trilliant, since trillion is also a number. 5mm trilliant stones are used across the board, irrespective of the main stone size.

Protea pave shank
Protea pave shank

Pave shank settings are solitaire models with extra blink on the sides. Pave shanks are sturdy yet delicate. They have thin metal border on the both sides of the studded area which makes them slightly different than the shared prong shanks (scroll further below). This border however prevents the side stones from scratching the metal of other rings worn on the same finger.

Protea shared prong

The shared prong setting is one of the most popular engagement ring styles especially when large statement stones are involved. When combined with a protea bezel it is “the best of both” combination in terms of popularity. The difference between the classic pave set shank and the shared prong is mainly in the presence of a metal border. Shared prong shanks lack border. They are very narrow and delicate looking. To keep the safety and longevity of the ring however, the shank requires extra thickness, added bulk metal, to make it sturdy and prevent it from getting misshaped. The rings are comfortable despite the balky side look.

Crown bezel

Crown Bezel is a solitaire ring with diamond studded bezel. The studded part is only visible from the side but despite this the extra blink is quite noticeable. Crown bezel requires substantial thickness to accommodate the pave stones and it is offered for main stone over 7mm diameter. Option with pave studded shank is also available.

Oval moissanite options

Same high quality setting with protea style bezel but with an oval main stone. Oval stones are particularly suitable for trilliant side stone combinations. Here, the rings are offered with 1 carat (5x7mm) and 1.5 carat (6x8mm) size main stones. Bigger sizes are available on request.
